Microsoft Office - History and development

When it comes to office automation , the first thing that comes to mind is Microsoft Office. However, there are some other softwares as Microsoft Office alternative like - Open office , IBM Lotus Symphony , Neo office , Zoho etc. One cannot imagine a Windows based computer, especially a business PC, without Word , Excel and PowerPoint, The future may hold the key to cloud based apps and more use in touch , but as of now, a pretty large chunks of Microsoft users are using local installation of Office with their mouse and keyboard. For the past few years Microsoft earned more from their Office software than those from the range of Windows. Microsoft office stays ahead in offering the latest features that enhance and support the functions required by the over changing needs of business houses.

This article deals with the different versions of Microsoft Office that debuted as an add-on for Windows 2.0 and went to change the face of office office automation across the business housed on the planet. It shifted users from the then famous WordPerfect to Microsoft Word and killed the market of WordPerfect and other office software.

The history of Microsoft Office starts from the November 19 , 1990 when office for Windows, called Microsoft Office 1.0 came out for use with Windows 2.0. Prior to Office , the basic elements of the package were still available as separate programs but for MS-DOS. The primary input devices for pre-Windows ; Microsoft Word were keyboards. It had good and essential features , formatting and printing requires good experise.

Office 1.0 - Welcome me

On November 19 ,1990 a combination of Word 1.1 , Excel 2.0 and PowerPoint released, combinedly known as Office 1.0. Microsoft advertised, "Three top performers unite for box office smash." In the same year as this release , Microsoft becomes the first company t exceed $1 billion sales.

Office 1.5 - New Spreadsheet

Year 1991 , MS Office 1.5 was released with only Microsoft Excel improved form Excel 2.0 to Excel 3.0 .

Office 3.0 - On CDs

On August 30, 1992 Microsoft Office 3.0 was released on CD-ROM including Word 2.0c , Excel 4.0a , PowerPoint 3.0 and Microsoft Mail. It was later known as Office 92. Prior to Office 3.0 distribution package was sequential on floppies sets.

Office 4.0 and 4.3 - Rich UI

Year 1994, Office 4.0 was released. There was one small upgrade for Excel form Excel 4.0a to Excel 4.0 . The major overhaul was MS Word , called Word 6.0, which now had a very rich interface focusing on formatting. 

On June 2 , Office 4.3 released, featuring Word 6.0 , Excel 5.0 , PowerPoint 4.0 and Mail 3.2 plus Access 2.0 in the pro version. Office 4.3 was the last 16-version and the last to support Windows 3.x , Windows NT3.1 and Windows NT3.5 .
